Sometimes things in pop culture align perfectly. Whether it’s synching up Pink Floyd’s “Echoes” with the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey, or a bunch of anime clips cut to “The Becoming” by Nine Inch Nails, a combination of seemingly disparate elements can come together and perfectly distill both to reveals their true essence. She was the reigning queen of detective fiction’s Golden Age – but Agatha Christie’s most intriguing mystery remains her unsolved disappearance in 1926. On a chilly December evening, the 36-year-old Christie vanished from her English estate in Sunningdale, Berkshire. While the famed author reportedly left a note that claimed she had gone on vacation, the…
Like several great memes before it, this one began at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which has since its inception been ripe for rabid online ingestion via themes of humiliation, fear, and triumph of the adolescent spirit. It’s a live television event akin to the grammatical Hunger Games, wherein wee sprouts still small enough to…
The devil in this particular equation? “Legitimacy.” Today news broke that the UFC parted ways with one of their most recognizable figures. Not a fighter, not a commentator, not even a referee—but rather, a cutman by the name of Jacob “Stitch” Duran. Cutmen play a massively important role in the octagon: they tend to injuries…
I am a freak for the American road trip. And I’m not alone, as some of this country’s best writers have taken a shot at describing that quintessentially American experience. “There is no such knowledge of the nation as comes of traveling in it, of seeing eye to eye its vast extent, its various and teeming…
Presidential hopeful and would-be Christ figure Ted Cruz recently did an interview with The New York Times, and it’s an absolute must-read. Rather than delve deeply into policy, interviewer Ana Marie Cox presses the senator about who he is under that “wacko bird” exterior. As a youth, he was an unpopular nerd. He loved and still loves Spider-Man and…
On Thursday afternoon, one day after rapper Nicki Minaj and white rapper Taylor Swift became embroiled in an extremely heated Twitter exchange about race and about nothing, area woman Katy Perry tweeted this: Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of…

Joining the chorus is the…

We’ve finally got a good look at SPECTRE, and there are all the usual Bond trappings — Q even presents 007 with a tricked-out car and hacking skills this time — but at the root of everything? Bond backstory. Everything that’s happening in this trailer is about Bond, and less national security. Waltz’s character has…
