“The Muslim immigration ban is not right,” he wrote. Moments later, he sent a third tweet: “They rarely warrant a public statement. However, the ban on Muslim immigrants from certain countries rises to this level. It is not right.”
The tweets weren’t live for long before Musk deleted them completely. He later said they were drafts he had written earlier and accidentally published this week. It seems like a logical explanation, particularly after the national conversation moved this week from the immigration ban to the resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.
That said, the tweets provide a window into Musk’s thinking. The CEO criticized Trump the presidential candidate, but later joined President Trump’s business advisory council. Musk apparently wanted to tweet that Trump’s Muslim-focused immigration ban was “not right,” but sent a softer response instead, tweeting on Jan. 28: “The blanket entry ban on citizens from certain primarily Muslim countries is not the best way to address the country’s challenges”

“Many people negatively affected by this policy are strong supporters of the US,” he wrote in a follow-up tweet from the same day. “They’ve done right, not wrong, and don’t deserve to be rejected.”
Musk has received daily calls to step down from Trump’s advisory council, but has said he intends to stay on the council to lobby for renewable energy, on behalf of climate science, and other issues.
